Meet the Marquette Gang: Dr. Darlene Weiss!

1. Where are you from and where do you hope to go? I was born in Minnesota and left the state to come to Marquette when I was 18 and have stayed in Wisconsin ever since. I will stay here because I am close to most of my children, grandchildren, etc. and like being near them. I have made all 7 continents so I don't necessarily feel the need to go anywhere else.

2. First impression of Peru: When I first came here a good 10 years ago, I was surprised at the depth of poverty. I knew it was a poor, low resource area where I was going, but the abject poverty was overwhelming.

3. What type of nursing interests you most: International health because the public health aspect offers so much for a nurse. Physicians have incredible skills but in international health nurses are able to do a tremendous impact on whichever nation.

4. Favorite experience of the trip thus far: Just getting to know the students that are with me on a personal basis because we didn't have much opportunity to do so before.

5. What has been the most eye-opening experience while in Peru: Oh well, I'm not sure I can answer. I'm always impressed with the generosity, the spiritualtiy, the deep faith, the friendliness and how they're willing to share everything they have. That's just a constant for me.

  1. Alex, how nice to be able to hear a little about the people you are involved with, including nurses, doctors, and the Peruvians. FYI, Dr. Weiss' photo did not show up on this blog page. Perhaps it is just my computer? Keep up the good work ... I love you, Grammy
