Meet the Marquette Gang: Kerry!

1. Where are you from and where do you hope to go? I'm from Port Washington, WI and my parents recently moved to Madison, WI. I hope to stay in the Milwaukee area because I went to Marquette for my undergrad and enjoy the area with my family being close as well.

2. First impression of Peru: I didn't realize it would be so poor and rundown. I wasn't expecting a third wolrd country or developing nation just outside the center of cities. It was never something I thought I'd see in my life.

3. What type of nursing interests you most: Before entering the program I worked in the eye institute neuro-opthamology area for two years and really enjoyed that. Working there introduced me to this area of medicine and the complexity of it which I really enjoy. However, I am still exploring other areas.

4. Favorite experience of the trip thus far: Aside from the beach, my favorite experience has been finding a fetal heartbeat for a mother for the very first time. The joy she expressed radiated and it was so touching.

5. What has been the most eye-opening experience while in Peru: Entering homes that are built soley of mud and sticks where there are pigs and ducks living in communion with the families and flies all over the place. Stilł seeing the pride these people have in their homes and their lifestyles is incredible. It makes me extremely thankful for what I have and makes me want to help the needy.

  1. Alex, what a wonderful idea to interview members of "The Gang." Reading Kerry's comments adds some additional information about the lifestyles of the Peruvians. Thanks for taking the time to do this and to help educate those of us that will never travel to Peru. God Bless all of you! Love, Grammy
